Husband of Mary (Schaad) Miller and father of George. He came to the US from Bavaria sometime during the 1850s (the bible page indicates that he married his wife in Europe in 1852). He settled for a time near St. Louis, in St. Clair County Illinois before moving to a farm in Atkins, Benton Co., IA.

Oral history of John from his grandchildren George Joseph (Joe) Miller and Margaret Mary (Miller) Carstens:

"John was in a German army desertion around 1848 in which about 30,000 troops deserted. He was a stowaway on the ship to the US that his future wife was on. He was found at sea and worked as a crew member to pay for his passage. There were two brothers who came to the US with John. They settled in Ohio & one of them changed his name of "Moyer" or "Moeller".

John traded a stallion for 80 acres SW of Atkins & built his home. In later years, he turned his home into a hotel for the people going west."

The only part of those items that I have been able to verify is the fact that he turned his home into a Hotel for people traveling west. There is a web site on this here.
