He enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1944 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Millwright and also as Single, without dependents.

He was married after his enlistment.

Matthew died in the "Line Of Duty" when his B-29 crashed 6 miles West of Rush Springs, Oklahoma during the war.
