"According to the regimental history book "History of the 16th Battery of Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery U.S.A," published in 1906 and reprinted in 1998 by Higginson Book Company, William Abney (aka William R. Abney) originally entered the service on 9/4/1861 with the 34th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, but was then detached from that regiment in March 1863, and assigned to the 16th Ohio, place unknown. The Indiana regiment name is inscribed on his gravestone. There is no information in that book that he returned to his original company before being mustered out, as is usually stated in that book if that happened. So, barring any publication error or omission, he probably was mustered out with the 16th Ohio on 8/2/1865. Abney was a Private in the Union Army."
