The sixth son of William and Elizabeth Hext Sams. Berners married (1) Elizabeth Hann Fripp on November 12, 1812, and (2) Martha Edwards on November 30, 1831. He was a physician and successful planter.

Berners inherited half of Datha (Dataw), including the old Sams home site. He added a wing to each side of the original structure, making it in effect three separate houses. He also owned two homes in Beaufort which still stand.
