James Philo Isenhower, 94, of Conover, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.

Born Sept. 6, 1920 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late John Abel Isenhower and Susie Avery Jordan Isenhower.

He graduated from Newton-Conover High School and attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he ran track and Bowling Green College. He managed Conover Gin Company and Newton Bonded Warehouse before beginning a career in real estate at James P. Isenhower Realty. He was a life-long member of Concordia Lutheran Church where he served on many boards and committees.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a hospital corpsman. In addition to having served on the Conover City Council, he was a member of the Cotton Warehouse Association of America, Catawba Valley Association of Realtors, Newton Kiwanis Club, Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, Catawba Valley Executives Club, and the Catawba County Historical Association. He was a 67-year member of the American Legion Post Number 16.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lillian Warlick Isenhower; son, Lt. Col. James Philo Isenhower Jr.; brothers, John Abel Isenhower Jr., Horace J. Isenhower Sr., and Dr. Samuel H. Isenhower; and sisters, Annie L. Isenhower, Susie Alice I. Hambright, and Celia I. Saunders.

Mr. Isenhower is survived by sons, David L. Isenhower and wife, Sherri of Conover and Alan Isenhower and wife, Molly of Kirkland, Wash.; daughter, Lynn I. Mullinax and husband, Robert of Newton; daughter-in-law, Margaret "Peg" Isenhower of Olympia, Wash.; brothers, Dr. Joseph A. Isenhower and wife, Juanita of Hickory, W. Stine Isenhower and wife, Sarah Ann of Conover; grandchildren, Col. James P. Isenhower III and wife, Sherrill, Megan I. Frampton and husband, Brian, Eric A. Isenhower, Brian E. Isenhower and wife, Kathy, Ashley K. Isenhower, Hon. Robert Mullinax Jr. and wife, Kim, Mary Jordan Samuel and husband, Robert, Matthew A. Isenhower and wife, April, Andrew M. Isenhower, William J. Isenhower and wife, Leigh Ann; great-grandchildren, John Abel, Nicholas, Jimmy, Keylee, Mack, Chris, Kerri, John, Adrienne, Zac, Lily Beth, Jack, Elizabeth, Aurora, Autumn; great-great-grandchildren, Desiree, Harris, Lily, Haven, Ali, and Falyn; and many nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Concordia Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Schudde and the Rev. Brian Weaver officiating. A private graveside service with Naval military honors will be held at Conover City Cemetery prior to the service.
