He grew up in Eastern Kansas. His father died when he was nine years old and he took over the family farm at a very young age.

On March 15, 1947, he married Betty Lucile Kraus in Topeka, Kansas. They first met in a one-room rural school house when she was in first grade and he was in third grade. They were married six weeks short of 66 years. They had four children.

Dale and Betty moved to Palisade, Colorado in 1949. They farmed fruit in the Palisade area from 1950 until their retirement in 2007, most of the time under their company known as Sunset Orchards Inc. and the Colorado Gold trademark.

He was an active member of the Palisade United Methodist Church and held numerous positions within the church's administration.

Dale had many accomplishments during his lifetime as a peach farmer, some of which were President of the National Peach Council, President and lifetime member of the Western Colorado Horticulture Society, President and active member of the Mesa County Peach Board of Control. Two of his proudest accomplishments were receiving the National Peach Council's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, and being inducted in the Colorado State Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1998.

Dale enjoyed all types of farming and ranching activities as well as hunting, fishing and sporting events.

He particularly enjoyed times spent with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great pride to him. They could always count on him for love and sound advice.
