Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1966 to 1970), he played at the quarterback position in the American and National Football Leagues with the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers. Born Richard Eugene Norton, he attended Flaget High School in Kentucky where he first achieved greatness on the gridiron, as he earned first-team All-State honors in 1961. After playing collegiate football at the University of Kentucky (where he achieved All-American status), he was selected by Miami as the 2nd overall pick during the 1st round of the 1966 AFL Draft. Norton became part of the early history of the Miami Dolphins' franchise as he shared quarterback duties with George Wilson, Dick Wood and John Stofa during their inaugural season of 1966 and the next three years after. In 1969, he produced a career-high 709 passing yards. Norton moved onto the Packers in 1970 and served as a backup to Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr and Don Horn. After retiring from football, Norton worked in the construction industry and served at various capacities within Kentucky's state government. He died from heart related issues.
