Hungarian Biophysicist, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1961) for his discovery of the mechanism of perception of sound in the mammalian ear. After emigrating to the United States in 1947, he worked at Harvard University until 1966. He subsequently moved to the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he established the Sensory Sciences Institute. This laboratory later merged with the Pacific Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) and became the Békésy Laboratory of Neurobiology, a leading research institution in the Pacific region.
