MARSHALL – Ray Leonard "Squeak" Payne, 80, of Marshall, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the VA Medical Community Living Center in Asheville.
Mr. Payne was born April 5, 1933 in Madison County. In his earlier years, he was known for his ability to play football and baseball. "Squeak" graduated from Marshall High School and attended Western Carolina University on a football scholarship. He served in the U.S. Army during 1955 to 1957. "Squeak" spent the majority of his days farming, raising tobacco and cattle in Madison County. He had a love for hunting, especially coon hunting and a special love for plot hounds. On Friday nights, "Squeak" could be found down at the Depot. He loved music, especially the song "Rocky Top". Mr. Payne was loved by his family and friends and will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe M. and Myrtle Wild Payne; sisters, Helen Payne, Marie Payne Haskell and Evelyn Payne Henderson; and a brother, Joe Payne, Jr.
Surviving are his son, Ray Scott Payne; a brother, Tillery Kirk Payne and his wife Margaret; nephews, Monty Payne and Tracy Henderson.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Honeycutt officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirk Payne Cemetery.
