Darryl Lynn Jenkins was born on February 7, 1956 in Port Arthur, Texas to Howard and Mary Louise Jenkins. His mother and brother, Howard Jenkins, Jr. preceded him in death. His father at age 88 years old resides in Mansfield, LA. Darryl was the 5th of eight siblings. He received his education in the Port Arthur, Texas School District by attending Lamar Elementary, Franklin Jr. High, and Lincoln High School. He received his GED from the Job Corps. He accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior into his life at an early age, as he attended East Mount Olive Baptist Church under the pasturage of Rev. Rufus Collins. In 1971 his mother passed so Darryl took on two surrogate mothers, Ms. Jesse (Alberta Spooner) and Aunt Pal (Emma Bernard) whom he loved dearly. The loss of his mother was devastating for him so he decided to enter into the Army. After completing his military service in 1975 he landed at the Travis Air Force Base located in Fairfield, CA. Darryl's employment included working as a Stock Boy at Calico Grocery Store in Port Arthur, Texas and as an Armored Security Guard; he worked in shipping and receiving at FMC Corporation in San Jose, California. His final job before leaving California was as an automobile assembler at New United Motors Manufacturing Incorporated in Fremont, CA. Darryl finally found the love of his life, deLisa S. Roberts at San Jose City College in 1977. After relocating to Houston, Texas, deLisa wanted him to meet her entire family so they visited Norfolk, Virginia. He volunteered at Southwest Memorial Hospital, in Houston, which saved his life on December 9, 1999 after he had a cardiac arrest. Darryl decided that Norfolk was where he wanted to live. On September 25, 2001 they were married and drove to Norfolk, VA. They were always together affectionately showing their love for one another. You rarely saw one without the other. He spoiled her and she spoiled him. At several different hospitals where he volunteered, he brought smiles to sad faces and always encouraging any one he met. He continued to volunteer in Norfolk, VA at DePaul Hospital for six years and switched to Sentara General until his death. Darryl enjoyed most sports including football (Dallas Cowboys was his team!), basketball, or baseball and always staying on top of who was winning in each category. His love of FISHING (which he inherited from his mother) was his favorite sport. He enjoyed going out on chartered boats, deep sea fishing or fishing on a bank or shoreline with his brother-in-law and friends and Magic (his dog). Fishing was the hobby he loved and bragged about it when he was lucky at catching them. Not only did he love catching them, he really enjoyed cooking and eating them. Darryl loved spending time with his biological family and his wife's family. He enjoyed cooking and barbequing for them and took pleasure in watching them enjoy eating the food that he prepared. If he didn't know how to prepare a certain type of food, he would telephone one of his sisters, sisters-in-law or surrogate mothers to get the recipe and instructions. He loved visiting and spending time with his father, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, cousins, in-laws, and friends. Attending family reunions were among the most memorable times of his life. Darryl was a loving, sweet, thoughtful, generous, funny, friendly, joyful, loyal and pleasant man and the list could go on and on. If you ever spent time with him you would agree. He brought joy to everyone he met. He always encouraged his family and friends to get along with each other because life was short and we needed to take every opportunity to enjoy being with one another His given nicknames are Uncle Phil (from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Big Darryl and Pepper. Darryl was the light that always shined everywhere he went. Even when he was beating you at Dominos or Bid Whist, his wonderful smile and his laughter enlightened you. He enjoyed entertaining his many friends, neighbors, and family. He always made you laugh. But Magic (his dog) is who brought him so much delight! On June 11, 2013 deLisa awakened to prepare herself to go to work and found Darryl sitting up in a chair. She asked, "What's wrong?" He replied, "I can't breathe, call 911". She did and when the ambulance arrived, they worked on him as well as the staff at the De Paul Hospital Emergency Room to revive him, but were unsuccessful. deLisa was informed that there was nothing more they could do. The Lord had called Darryl home to be with him. Precious memories of Darryl are held by his wife deLisa S. Roberts-Jenkins; his father Howard Jenkins, Sr. (Mansfield, LA.); three daughters, LaTasha Jenkins-Bell (Chris Bell II) (Stockton, CA.), Alena Jenkins (San Jose, CA.) and Arlesia Carrier (Port Arthur, Texas); four grandchildren Tarrell Alexander, Kaycie Pennywell, Nichelle Lynn Jenkins (San Jose, CA.) and Kamari Bell (Stockton, CA.); four sisters Gloria Roberson (Phillip) (Port Arthur, TX.), Elvenia Faye Jenkins-Carey (Oakland, CA.), Linda Jenkins-Fuller (Ron) (Vallejo, CA.), Sonjia Renea Jenkins; two brothers, Roland Jenkins (Shreveport, LA.) and Carl Jenkins (Austin, TX.); one Aunt, Emma Bernard (Houston, TX.); two uncles, Herbert Batiste (Houston, TX.) and Bennie Jenkins (Shreveport, LA.); his sisters-in-law, Margeline Roberts, Francine Olgesby, Vera Galloway, Burnesse Roberts-Boddie (Andrew), Jacqueline Wingate, Doreene Riberio, Antoniette Roberts and Irma Roberts (his late brother-in-law, Louis' wife), two brothers-in-law, Delton Dixon and Robin Roberts, and his best friend, his beloved dog Magic. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special & dear friends, and neighbors.
