John James Moss was born in 1828 at Lewis County, Kentucky to Isaac and Mary Ann (Chaney) Moss. John spent his early childhood in the frontier country of Coles County, Illinois, near the present-day town of Camargo. His was just the third family of settlers to take up residence in that county.

John's father Isaac passed away when John was just 18 years of age. At 22, he remained with his mother at New Albany in Coles County, IL when the US Census was taken there in 1850. He helped her to care for his seven brothers and sisters who were now fatherless.

John married Hannah Waggaman in about 1850. She was a native of Vermillion County, Illinois, and a daughter of Andrew and Tabitha (Lyon) Waggaman. By 1860, John and Hannah were raising three daughters in Douglas County, IL, next-door to John's grandfather, James Chaney.

In August of 1862, John J. Moss joined the Union Army. He was mustered into service as a Private with Company 'E' of the 79th Illinois Infantry Regiment at Camp Terry, IL. Private John J. Moss would have participated at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky during October 1862, as well as at the Battle of Stones River at Murfreesboro, TN, in late December to early January of 1863, where he was disabled due to injuries sustained there. He served only a little over four months before being discharged on January 3, 1863 at Nashville, TN, due to 'disability'. His enlistment papers describe him as 5'8" in height with dark hair, a light complexion, and hazel eyes.

By 1870, John J. Moss and his wife Hannah were residing at Mount Ayr in Ringgold County, Iowa along with four of their five daughters, as well as Hannah's sister, Martha Waggaman.

In 1880, the Moss family was at Rice Township, still in Ringgold, Iowa. Three of John and Hannah's six daughters were living with them at that time, as well as John's mother, Mary Ann (Chaney) Moss.

A thirty year gap exists in the record for John J. Moss, therefore little is known about him during the period between 1880 and 1910. At some point he moved his family to Pawnee County, Oklahoma. He lost his youngest daughter Hattie there at the age of 21 in 1899. Two years later, his daughter Laura passed away at the age of 35.

John's wife Hannah (Waggaman) Moss passed away in 1906. By the time of the US Census in 1910, John had taken another wife by the name of Catharine. They were living near the town of Keystone, Oklahoma, next-door to John and Hannah's daughter Sarah E. Bean and her husband Simon.

John J. Moss passed away on 17 November 1914. He was laid to rest next to his first wife Hannah at Sinnett Memorial Cemetery in Oak Grove, OK.
