He enlisted in Company G, Vermont 2nd Infantry Regiment on 13 Mar 1865 at Underhill, Vermont, and mustered out on 15 Jul 1865 at Washington, DC.
In 1869 at Nashua, New Hampshire, he married Isabella L Stevens. They had at least two children. (Note: the marriage certificate says "Stearns" and is incorrect.)
About 1893, he married Caroline (Hardy) Wheelock in a second marriage.
In 1900 he was a railroad conductor.
