JOHNSTON CITY - Joe Wendell Williams 72, of Benton, passed away at 2:26 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Services will be at noon Saturday in Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery of Johnston City. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Marion VFW, the American Legion and the Illinois Army National Guard.

Joe was born May 17, 1941, in Pittsburg, the son of Joe Burl and Louise (Burgess) Williams. He married Marjorie (Richey) who preceded him in death.

Joe was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.

He was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Pittsburg.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1965.

Joe enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by three children, Michael Tyrone Williams of Pittsburg, Marcy Hammonds and husband, Bradley of Marion, and Matthew Williams and wife, Ashley, of Marion; nine grandchildren, Kiffany, Timothy, Shaynee, Rylee, Quentin, Matthew Jr., Austin, Noah, and Isaiah; three great-grandchildren, Alexzavior, Xzadin, and Xzavia; one sister, Peggy Williams of Pittsburg; one brother, Jerry Williams of Gerald, Mo.; and a dear friend, Sharon Cottonaro of Pittsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Billy Williams and a great-grandson, Malachi.
