Erma M. Gardiner Winter, 67 died July 20, 2013 following a prolonged illness. Diminutive in size but strong in spirit, Erma proved to be a fighter who extended her life well beyond medical expectation through sheer will power and unmitigated optimism.

Born Dec. 28, 1945, to Harold Birk and Erma (nee Young) Gardiner on her father's birthday. Graduated from Highland High School and attended LDS Business College. She married Gordon L. Winter on Oct. 21, 1983, in Salt Lake City, UT.

Employed for 40 years with insurance businesses, including Bonneville Brokers and American Insurance and Investment, her career marked by professional competence and dedicated service to clients for whose benefit she regularly worked extended hours. Gordon and Erma shared professional and recreational interests. Stylish even in biker leather, she traversed the western U.S. on the back of his Harley and loved four-wheeling in Delle and Knolls. The two were devoted train travelers. Erma enjoyed theater and attended plays with friends as a season ticket holder. She loved most sports and was an avid UT fan. Loved gardening and reading. Erma's generous and caring nature extended to everyone she met. Feisty enough to justify her red hair and unfailingly honest. Erma's personal warmth and humor bolstered those around her. She looked for and found good in both people and situations. Her mother called her namesake "our little sunshine" and Erma's ability to brighten the world never diminished. She considered herself a "sports model" rather than a domestic one, and was grateful for Gordon's culinary skill and, especially in recent years, his devoted care. Above all, Erma loved family. She claimed Gordon's son, Nate, as her own and adored her grandchildren Aspen, Lucas and Corbin.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Pearl and office staff Kathy and Judy for years of skilled and compassionate care.

Survived by husband; step-son, Nathan (Chattni) and grandchildren Aspen, Lucas and Corbin; brothers and sisters: Mark (Sherry) Gardiner, Rexburg, ID; Paul (Martha) Gardiner, Sue (David) Wolfgramm, Art (Jolene) Gardiner, all Bountiful; Louise (Cole) Durham, Provo; Marcia Gardiner, San Francisco; sister-in-law Janet Gardiner, Layton; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents; son, Joshua; brother, Harold and sisters Janice Wright and Jean Gardiner; brother-in-law Ronald Wright.

Graveside service Saturday, July 27, 11 a.m. Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr., SLC. Interment Wasatch Lawn.
