Marcellus Newton Moorman was born on 13 Mar 1835 at Lynchburg, Virginia. He began military service on 25 Apr 1861 at Lynchburg Light Artillery Regiment Virginia, Lynchburg, Campbell Co., VA, enlisted as a Captain, at Lynchburg, Virginia, age 25 and received his Commission. Promoted to Full Captain on 15 April 1862 (Re-lected). Census: 10 May 1861, Beauregard Rifle, 2nd Corps; Census: 1880, in Campbell Co., VA. He married Ellen Grace Moorman, daughter of John Clark Moorman and Catherine Leftwich, on 20 Jan 1863. He was promoted to Full Major on 15 April 1864 (As of 2nd Corps). He was wounded on 08 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. He ended military service on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Surrendered Lynchburg Light Artillery Regiment Virginia, Unit # 572. He died on 29 May 1904 at Lynchburg City, VA, at age 69. He was buried circa 1 Jun 1904 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA. (Information provided by: Leila Eldridge D'Aiutolo)
