CHARLES GOWING DROPS DEAD A very sudden death occurred in Listowel on Monday morning of this week, when Charles Gowing, an elderly citizen of the town, dropped dead while speading gravel on the road bed outside of the corporation. The teamster who was drawing gravel noticed him rest a few minutes on his shovel and then saw him suddenly drop over. He ran to his assistance, but by the time he and some other men who were working in a nearby field arrived, life was extinct. It is thought that heart failure was the cause of his death. The deceased, Charles Gowing, was born in Lower Canada on Feb 20th, 1837 and was thus in his 74th year. In Feb 1898 he was married to Margaret Jane White, his third wife, who survives. He has a family of four sons and five daughters. The late Charles Gowing had been a resident of Listowel for about 14 years and was universally respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the United Brethren Congregational Church and was a man of good moral habits, quiet and peaceable. He was buried in the Listowel Cemetery.
