Edward J. Chmielowski, 74, of Collingdale, formerly of Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, a retired sheet-metal mechanic, died Nov. 1 at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the first underwater demolition team, the forerunner of the Navy Seals.
He owned Diversified Metal, 2020 Front St., Philadelphia, retiring in 1992.
He was predeceased by brothers Raymond and John Chmielowski. Survivors: Wife, Theresa "Terry" Ianiera Chmielowski; sons, Edward Chmielowski of Edgewood, Md., Timothy Chmielowski and David Chmielowski of Bethel, Richard Chmielowski of Collingdale, Michael Chmielowski of Ridley Township, Stephen Chmielowski of New Florence, Westmoreland County; daughters, Theresa Monson of Upper Darby, Donna Gilbert of Folcroft, Patricia Sawicki of Aston; sisters, Josephine Di Simone and Emily Bissett of Clifton Heights; brothers, Joseph Chmielowski, Florian "Bubzy" Chmielowski, Leonard Chmielowski, all of Alaska; 26 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Bartram and Woodlawn avenues, Collingdale.
Burial: SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple. Visitation: 6-9 tonight, and 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at the James F. Knoetgen Funeral Home, 910 MacDade Blvd., Collingdale.
