David Michael Melcher, 71, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on Monday, July 22, 2013, at his home in Ankeny, surrounded by his family.

He was born July 25, 1941, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Howard and Bernice Heyland Melcher. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1959.

On January 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Rankin at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.

Early on Mike went to work selling cars in Oskaloosa for Green's Ford and later Carriker Ford. Later, Mike worked selling water works and plumbing supplies. He worked for several companies, including Clow Valve, UECO, and Municipal Supply. He worked in sales in Omaha, North Carolina, and Des Moines. He retired from Municipal Supply in 2008.

Mike enjoyed following NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and golfing. He also enjoyed his many years of announcing at the Eddyville Drag Strip. He was a member of the I-Club.

Mike is survived by his wife, Carolyn Melcher of Ankeny; a son and his wife, David and Cathi Melcher of Omaha, Nebr.; a daughter-in-law (Patrick's widow), Janelle Melcher of Omaha; four grandchildren, Max, Ryan, Isabella, and John David Melcher; a brother, John K. Melcher of Oskaloosa; two sisters, Mary (& Bob) Brackett of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Melanie (& Dr. Edward) Hirl of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law, Donna (Howard) (& Dale) Johnson of Oskaloosa; many nieces and nephews; and a host of close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, John and Patrick Melcher.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa, with Reverend Jeff Belger officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, and the family will be at the funeral home from 5:30 to 7:30 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. A time of remembrance will be held at 7:30 Friday evening at the funeral home.
