Gary A. Schmiedlin, 54, Barron, Wis., died Sunday, July 17, 2005.

He was born April 21, 1951, at Madison, the son of Willard and Elinor (Arneson) Schmiedlin. He grew up in Madison and graduated from Madison East High School.

He graduated from UW-River Falls with a Bachelors of Science degree before working as a Soil Conservationist for over 30 years in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

On Aug. 23, 1975, he married Ruth Ovsak at River Falls. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1993.

He later married Jackie Leonhard on Aug. 19, 1995, at Tony.

Gary was very active in the Barron Boy Scouts Troop 6. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He also enjoyed farming, was an avid gardener and liked traveling.

He attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Barron.

Survived in addition to his wife, Jackie, are his mother, Elinor Schmiedlin of Madison; a son, Brian of Barron; a daughter, Teresa Schmiedlin of La Crosse; a stepson, Nick Mauthe of Marquette, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Mauthe of Marquette; brothers, Robert of Baraboo and Wayne of Sun Prairie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his father and a brother, William.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Father Jack Kissling and Deacon Michael Cullen officiating, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls.

Visitation held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday from Rausch-Rockman Funeral Home, Barron, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.
