MOUNT DESERT — Sylvia J. "Jeannie" Freeman, 79, of Mount Desert died July 19, 2013, in Ellsworth. She was born Feb. 28, 1934, the daughter of Ernest A. and Mertie M. (Latty) Murphy Sr. in Tremont.

Jeannie married Doug Freeman in July of 1951. She raised her family in Seal Cove, where she baked up a storm, feeding much of the neighborhood and her family many delicious treats. She worked packing sardines for many years at Stinson Canning Co. in Southwest Harbor, all the while cooking, cleaning and hardly ever sitting still. After the factory closed, the life of a stay-at-home housewife included gardening, yard work and, of course, spending a great deal of time with her grandchildren. Later in life she acquired the job of baker at Big Al's Pitstop in Bass Harbor, which made "Gram" well-known for freshly baked goodies, especially her whoopie pies.

She is survived by her sister, Sandra Black and her husband, David, of West Tremont; her son, Bill Freeman and his wife, Stephanie, of Trenton; her daughter, Terry Dow and her husband, Gilbert, of Bass Harbor; grandchildren, Danny Schlaefer and his wife, Sarah Whitten, of Old Town, Amy Rich and her husband, Sandy, of Bass Harbor; and many nieces and nephews. Jeannie was predeceased by her husband, Douglas; her parents, Mertie and Ernest Murphy; her brother, Billy Murphy; and her sisters, Barbara Humphrey and Helen "Honey" Seavey.

Interment will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at Pretty Marsh Cemetery. No flowers, please. A get-together for family and friends will be at Terry and Gibby Dow's in Bass Harbor following the service. Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to Collier's Rehab and Nursing Center, 33 Birch Ave., Attn: Activity Fund, Ellsworth, ME 04605 or to the Pretty Marsh Cemetery Assoc., c/o Tom MacRae, 778 Indian Point Road, Mount Desert, ME 04660.
