Joseph came to the US from Lipnice, Bohemia in 1884. He settled in Plymouth, IA. He was the husband of Anna (Kimel) Vikturek and father of Edward Vikturek.

Joseph's wife died in 1900 and he is reported to have remarried "several times". According to his son, Edward, each time he remarried, they (the children) "ran her off". However, a check of the marriages of Cerro Gordo county IA has only turned up one other marriage and that was to Anna (Kovar) Koranda on 12 APR 1904 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA.
