Arlene J. Merriman, 94, formerly of Bronson, Mich., died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at the Beverly Living Center in Elkhart.
Arlene was born May 11, 1913 in Noble Township, Branch County, Michigan, daughter of Charles and Lura (McMahn) Heltzel. After graduation from high school, she attended Branch County Normal to receive her teaching certificate. She taught in the Bronson Country Schools for a few years until she started her family. After her children were raised, Arlene operated a child care facility for many years, and later performed home care for the elderly for many more years.
She was an 84-year member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Church, which made her the oldest living member of the church. She enjoyed sewing, especially clothes, quilts and toys for youngsters. She also was well known for her vegetable gardens and for canning fresh vegetables.
She was married to Garald Merriman on July 23, 1936, at Pleasant Hill. They divorced on April 17, 1945.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Dale Stout of Goshen; her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Glen and Carol Merriman of Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughters Barbara Merriman (who died at birth) and Wilma Gropp, a brother Harold Heltzel and a sister Dora Lombard.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007, at Pleasant Hill Missionary Church with her son the Rev. Glen Merriman officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, Mich., from 4 to 8 p.m. today, where memorial donations are suggested to the Gideon?s or to Pleasant Hill Missionary Church.
