Julius Berend Cohen was born on May 6, 1859 in Manchester. He had a twin brother, Adolf, and their father was Sigismund Cohen, a German who migrated to England to become a merchant shipper. Both boys followed their father into his business, but after a year, in 1878 Julius returned to college to study chemistry. He persuaded his father to let him to go and study further in Germany. This was said to be the point in his career at which he received his first inspiration which he was so successful in transmitting to his students.
