Civil War Union Officer. With a Captain’s commission, he enlisted into the United States volunteer service on September 6, 1862. At Brattleboro, Vermont, he was assigned to Company D of the 13th Vermont Infantry on October 4, 1862 and thereafter would be transferred to the seat of war where he ably led his men during the action at Fairfax Court House, Virginia in the winter of 1862. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 5, 1863. At the decisive battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Lieutenant Colonel and the 13th survived the Confederate’s artillery introduction of “Picket’s Charge” on July 3, 1863 and would play an essential role in the repulsing of this grand charge. Receiving a wound during this Union victory, he was mustered out of service on July 23, 1863.
