Delbert was the ninth child and only second boy born to Conrad and Clara Fredericksen in Penrose, Utah. He grew up in Penrose attending Penrose and Thatcher schools and graduated from Bear River High School and Garland LDS Seminary in May 1936. He attended the University of Utah where he received a scholarship and graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering June 1941. He then accepted a position in Peoria, Illinois. He worked at the Caterpillar Tractor Company where he enjoyed his work and was treated well. While in Peoria he served as Sunday School Superintendent for the LDS Church. Delbert entered the Navy on July 1, 1944. Delbert met and married Margaret Scherff of Peoria on March 18, 1945 in the St. Paul's Church in Peoria, Illinois. He had been married to Margaret only 6 months when he lost his life. A letter from the commanding officer states this: "On the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 18, 1945 our ship was wrecked on a beach in a typhoon. Del was washed over the side by a wave just prior to our ships going aground. He sustained a blow to the head which rendered him unconscious and he died of drowning. All of this took place about 1:45 a.m. and none of the officers or crew saw Del leave the ship. He was found Wednesday afternoon and was given a funeral with full military honors by the U.S. Navy." He was temporarily buried off the coast of Japan and three years later he was sent home for burial in the Penrose cemetery.
