Farina, who at one time was a real-life police officer who served 18 years in the Chicago Police Dept. from 1967 to 1985, was a character actor who was often typecast as a mobster or a police officer. He began his work in show business working as a police consultant which subsequently led to his being cast in a small role in the 1981 film 'Thief,' which led to memorable roles in such films as 'Code of Silence' (1985), 'Midnight Run' (1988), 'Romeo is Bleeding' (1993), 'Get Shorty' (1995), 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998), 'The Mod Squad' (1999), 'Snatch' (2000), 'Big Trouble' (2002) and 'The Last Rites of Joe May' (2011). On television he was featured in 'Hard Knox," 'Miami Vice,' 'Hardcastle and McCormick,' 'Remington Steele,' 'Crime Story,' 'The Case of the Hillside Stranglers,' 'Cruel Doubt,' 'Bella Mafia,' 'Law & Order', 'Empire Falls' and 'Luck.' Farina died after suffering a blood clot in his lung.
