East Palestine - Gary Lee May, 65, of SR 14, lost his courageous battle with cancer early Sunday morning, July 21st, 2013 at UPMC Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a three month illness.

Gary was born January 19, 1948 in Salem, a son of the late Gale and Alverta Spooner May.

Gary proudly served in the Special Forces as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He had been employed by Early International Sales & Service until his recent retirement in January of this year.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Operating Engineers Local 66.

Gary enjoyed most spending time at "The Ponderosa", their personal residence, a special place enjoyed by all his family and special friends. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-two years, Christine Figley, and his special girl, Olivia Rose Lee Figley. Gary is also survived by six siblings, Jana (Scott) Grim, Jean (Mark) Maxwell, David (Bree) Figley, Ben (Carolina) Figley, Danny (Veronica) Figley, Heather (Israel) Lloyd, as well as many, many beloved nieces and nephews who adored him, each of whom felt that they were his favorite.

In addition to his parents, Gale and Alverta May, he was preceded in death by his brothers Francis Figley, Jonathan Figley, and William Figley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 24th at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, New Waterford. A military service will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579.

The family has asked that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Knights of Columbus, Reagan Council 1890, c/o Our Lady of Lourdes Church or the East Palestine Social Concerns.
