Joe Connell Owen Sr., 85, was born on April 14, 1928, in Gleason, TN and died July 20, 2013, at the Northeast Louisiana War Veteran's Home, Monroe, LA.

Preceded in death by his parents, Chester Artemous Owen and Dedious Pearl Connell Owen; siblings, Artemous Owen Frakes, LaVerne Owen Cook, Mary Lou Owen Collins, Ruth Owen Grewcock, and Robert C. Owen.

Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carla Ashley Owen; his children, Dedious Willis and her husband Jerry of Chester, VA, Sammy Owen of Mt. Juliet, TN, Frank McMillan "Mac" Owen and his wife Mary of Divide, CO, David Owen and his wife Janice of West Monroe, LA, Joe Owen, Jr. and wife Shari of West Monroe, LA, and Becky Willis and her husband Jeff of Kenton, TN; Grandchildren, Shelly Hood, Julie Murphy, Sara Farmer, Erin Gorman, Tricia Unger, Sam Owen, David Owen, Danny Owen, Katie Owen, Heath Arthur, Cherry Hudnall, Callie Washer, Jenna Tyner, John-David Owen, Lauren Owen, Mac Aaron Owen, Denver Willis, Allison Willis, and Ashlyn Willis, and 25 great-grandchildren.

Served in the U.S. Army almost 21 years retiring in 1974 as SFC (E-7).

He moved to West Monroe, Louisiana that year to attend the Whites Ferry Road Church of Christ School of Biblical Studies, later serving as instructor.

He was the church "pink" bus minister at WFR from 76-81. Later lived in Winn Parish from 82-87 and preached at the Bethel Church of Christ in Calvin, LA.
Returned to Calhoun, LA to work as a warehouse and shipping manager at Howard Publishing and caretaker and cook of Camp Ch-Yo-Ca. During this time he preached at Cotton Valley Church of Christ and St. Joseph Church of Christ in Tensas Parish.

He helped establish congregations at Lakeview, Tacoma, WA and West Ouachita Church of Christ.

Joe and Carla met at the Church of Christ, Pacific Grove, CA, while he was stationed at Ft. Ord and married at the San Leandro Church of Christ. Previously he had served at Fort Bragg, NC and in Kirch-goens, Germany. From there he was sent to Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco with severe rheumatoid arthritis. After he recovered he was assigned to Ft. Lewis, WA; Baumholder, Germany; Fort Benning, GA; TuyHoa, Viet Nam; Ft. Lee, VA, where he retired from the Army.

Services will take place at the Jackson Street Church of Christ, Monroe, LA on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 10:00 am.

Interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Calhoun, LA.

Pallbearers are Josh Hudnall, Drew Tyner, Patrick Farmer, Hunter Murphy, John-David Owen, David Joseph Owen, Danny Owen, and Austen Hood.

Honorary pallbearers are Mac Aaron Owen, Denver Willis and special friends from Jackson Street Church of Christ.
Memorials may be made to Camp Ch-Yo-Ca or World Radio.
