**Lloyd HARRISON Shoots and Kills Wm. FORAN in a Barroom Fight at Stockton --

*The Victim Dies in Great Agony --
On Monday quite an excitement was caused in Hollister by the report that Lloyd HARRISON, formerly of this place, had shot and killed Wm. FORAN in a barroom fight at Stockton. Lloyd HARRISON is a son of Mr. Ed HARRISON, of this county, and is a half brother of Mr. J. Curtis MILLER, of Hollister. Following is an account of the shooting as published in the Stockton ‘Mail': [condensed by transcriber; full story p. 2, col. 2 & 3]

William FORAN, Officer TOWELL and John FINNAN entered the Palisade saloon, adjoining the RUSSELL stable, on Main street. FORAN rarely visited that saloon and when asked to go there on this occasion, refused at first. In the card-room sat Lloyd HARRISON and his brother, Frank…FORAN, who was intoxicated, looked in and called for the gentlemen to come have a drink…as he did he saw Frank HARRISON, between whose brother and FORAN there had been trouble over a foot-race wager…

A fight followed in which Lloyd started to take part. Officer TOWELL separated Frank and FORAN and shoved the former out into the bar-room…Frank resisted arrest and the policeman drew his revolver to club him if necessary. At this instant 2 shots were fired in the card-room. Running in, TOWELL saw FORAN on the floor and Lloyd HARRISON with a smoking revolver in his hand. He arrested the shooter and demanded the weapon. Lloyd refused to surrender it, but said he would give it up to Charles RICH -- one of the proprietors of the saloon. He passed it to his brother Frank, who gave it to RICH, who passed it to TOWELL.

One of the on-lookers says that some-one, he thinks was FINNAN, helped FORAN force Lloyd back against a small ice-chest, bent him over it and beat him. Lloyd either broke loose or was released, drew a pistol and fired. The first shot missed…the second struck FORAN very nearly over the center of the heart…FORAN called for his wife…Ben KOHLBERG ran into the saloon and talked with FORAN…Officer EDWARDS and Percy WILLIAMS also talked to him…he requested WILLIAMS to look out for the welfare of his family.

Drs. PHILLIPS and CZARTORYSKI were summoned…in response to questions put by District Attorney SMITH, FORAN stated that he did not know who had done the shooting and that he was not armed, corroborated by a search…he was left in the saloon until about 5 o'clock when he was removed to his dwelling on the north side of Miner avenue, Lindsay point.

In the saloon at the time of the tragedy were Charles RICH, a young man named McINTIRE (son of RICH's partner), the HARRISONs, Nelson BROWN, Seth PEYTON, John FINNAN, Officer TOWELL and Charles LESTER.

Lloyd HARRISON is about 25 years old. He is a nephew of Norval HARRISON, a wealthy farmer near Linden, and has been working at hauling hay for his cousin on a farm near the race-track. His brother, Frank, came from Tulare on Saturday last.

FORAN moved hither from Farmington several years ago and purchased the Eureka saloon. His estate consists entirely of personal property, among which is the saloon and moneys -- valued in all at 3 or 4 thousand dollars. Yesterday, he willed his estate to his wife and in order to avoid possible probate difficulties, took the further precaution of deeding it to her.

The HARRISONs are would-be sports. Ill feeling resulted between them some time ago over a matched bull-dog fight, and subsequently over a foot-race in which FORAN held the stakes and refused to surrender them for the reason that the case was to go into the courts -- as it subsequently did. At this time FORAN feared that he might be shot and accordingly left town and remained as a guest at the KIDD ranch, on Union Island, for a week.

[long description of FORAN's death]…the dying man was visited several times by Father BRENNAN, of St. Mary's church….FORAN‘s death happened at exactly 9 o‘clock…His last words were to this wife…

The deceased was 34 years old. Besides the widow he leaves a son 10 years old, who was visiting a relative at Watsonville at the time of the deceased's death. Mr. FORAN's father and mother reside in Mariposa county and it is thought that they will not be able to answer the summons sent time in time for the funeral, which will be held to-morrow.

Our reporter called at the jail to-day to get prisoner HARRISON's version of the killing, but he refused to be seen. W.L. DUDLEY has been retained as his counsel and it is reported that James H. BUDD will be employed to assist the District Attorney in the prosecution.

Frank HARRISON, who got into a fight with William FORAN at the Palisade saloon shortly before the shooting of FORAN by Lloyd HARRISON, yesterday morning, and who was arrested on a charge of disturbance of the peace, was discharged in the Police Court to-day. The City Attorney stated that the evidence against him was not sufficient to convict.

Son - Frank Arthur Foran (1877-1925, San Bernardino Co, CA)
