Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident Susan Joan Hofherr Goff will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Arriola Cemetery. Brother Don Smith of Towaoc will officiate.
Susan was born November 4, 1947 in Neosho, Missouri to Etta Joan (Prebble) Smith and Albert Eugene Smith. Susan resided at The Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos and then at Golden Years Retirement Home in Cortez. She had been hospitalized for some time and recently went to North Valley Hospital Rehabilitation in Thornton, Colo. for specialized medical treatment. Susan passed away Monday, September 1, 2008 at North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton at the age of 60.
At the age of eight Susan moved to the Cortez area with her mother, Etta Joan (Prebble) Hofherr. Susan and her sister, Marjorie, were legally adopted by Otto Hofherr. The family moved to Wyoming for a time and then returned to the Cortez area. She graduated from Montezuma Cortez High School in 1967. Shortly after graduation Susan married Kenneth Goff and to this union a son, Kenneth Steven Goff was born. In the late 1980's Susan met and married Jerry Collom formerly of Cortez. That union ended in divorce ten years later. In 1994, Susan adopted/fostered a daughter/niece by marriage, Jeannie Bryant.
Susan attended San Juan College and Fort Lewis College to study accounting and clerical procedures. She had many different occupations throughout her working years to include restaurant management, chef at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, long-haul truck driver, and school bus driver for Montezuma County School District for 12 years. Susan also held the distinction of being on the first Governor's Council formed to initiate the Low Income Energy Assistance Program in Colorado.
Susan was full of life, loved animals and had many friends. She especially enjoyed her long-time association with the Women's Auxiliary Bowling League in Cortez. Susan was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Surviving Susan are her son, Kenneth Steven Goff, of Durango, Colo.; her adopted daughter, Jeannie Bryant Hetherington of Aztec, N.M.; three grand children, Julie, Dalton and Daniel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Otto Hoefherr; her mother, Etta Joan Hoefherr Kindig; her step-father, Warren Kindig; and her sister, Marjorie Hofherr Moran.
