Porter and Lake County, Indiana History, Dec. 1882 [transcribed by John Glynn]
Part I. Biographical Sketches (for Porter Township)

SAMUEL CAMPBELL was born in Jefferson County, Tenn., November 14, 1797, the eldest of eleven children of John and Sarah (Vance) Campbell, natives of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Mr. Campbell attended school at intervals until fourteen years old, and then assisted on the home farm till about twenty-eight; the family then moved to Preble County, Ohio, and settled on a piece of land John Campbell had entered in 1816. September 25, 1823, Samuel Campbell married Elizabeth Frame, a daughter of William and Margarette Frame, and to this union were born eight children, viz.: Margarette J., now Mrs. Silas Gregg; Amanda M. (Mrs. Lacount Lambert), now deceased; Newton J., William F., John F.; Sarah E., now Mrs. James H. Kenworthy, and Nancy T., now Mrs. David B. Peck. The son William served in the late war, and now a resident of Nebraska. John Campbell died in 1831, when Samuel brought his family to this township, entered forty acres of land, and commenced life in a wilderness filled with wild but friendly Indians. Here he was made the township's first Supervisor, and has since been frequently elected to offices of trust and honor. In 1862, his house was destroyed by fire, and nearly all it contained was lost, but he soon put up a comfortable frame in which he and his wife are passing their declining days in retirement, attended by their daughter, Mrs. Kenworthy. Mr. Campbell is a staunch Republican, and stands well with his party.

SAMUEL CAMPBELL.

The subject of this notice was born in Jefferson county, East Tennessee, November 14, 1797; died January 20th, 1884, aged 86 years, 2 months, 6 days.

From Jefferson county he moved to Knoxville, Tenn., and in the spring of 1818 came with his parents to Preble county, Ohio. On the 23d of September 1823 he was married to Elizabeth Frame, who now survives him. There were born as the fruit of this union eight children, 4 boys and 4 girls, of whom seven are now living. In January 1831 he removed with his family to Union county, Indiana, and thence to Porter county in 1836 when he settled upon Horse Prairie, and has continued to reside in this county until his death. On the 6th of December 1882 he met with a serious accident from the effects of which he was a constant sufferer until released by death, yet he was patient through all the weary months of his trial and was never heard to murmur or complain. He was a man of the highest standing for integrity, a firm believer in the doctrines of the Christian religion and steadfastly confessed his faith in Jesus Christ. He had been a member of the Salem Presbyterian church in this county for many years. The funeral services were held in that church on January 22d and were conducted by Rev. Robert Beer of Valparaiso, a large congregation being present.
