Harriet L. Bluford, 79, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, March 11, 2007, at her residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Southern Hills Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Harriet was born April 10, 1927, in Chillicothe, Mo., the daughter of Thomas H. and Elzona B. (Blakely) Trosper. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1944. From 1944 to 1948, she attended Morningside College with degrees in education, psychology and religion as majors.

She married Grady L. Bluford on Nov. 14, 1959, at Mount Baptist Church in Sioux City.

In 1988, she enrolled in the Theological Seminary, Rossville, Ga., receiving her masters of ministry of Bible in 1989. She later received her doctoral program of Bible ministry. She was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church.

From 1951 to 1953, she was employed as the program director/group worker at the Sanford Center. From 1957 to 1969, she was employed at the Department of Social Welfare (now Department of Human Services) in Sioux City. From 1967 to 1979, she was an educator at Western Iowa Tech Community College and was a basic education teacher, teaching nonreaders to read. She also taught nonreaders to read at the Mary J. Tregelia Community House. She worked with the mentally handicapped at the Goodwill and Half-Way House, teaching reading, basic arithmetic, writing, job skills and social skills. She developed a cookbook for the mentally handicapped. She taught herself Braille in order to work with the blind and learned sign language in order to work with the deaf. She was a telemarketer at Pioneer TeleTechnology in Sergeant Bluff.

She was a member of ARP Club and self-employed in Mary Kay Cosmetics. She volunteered at the Girl's Club, teaching health and beauty.

Survivors include her husband, Grady of Sioux City; a son Derick L. Bluford of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a daughter, Michelle A. Bluford of Omaha; a sister and her husband, Beatrice and Everett Jackson of Tullahoma, Tenn.; four sisters-in-law, Verona "Cookie" Trosper, Stenola Bluford and Mildred Davis, all of Sioux City and Ethel Heller of Flint, Mich.; six nieces; a nephew; a grandnephew; and four grandnieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Bernice.

Pallbearers will be George Naylor, Harlin VerMeer, Rod Nieman, John Philip Hantla, George Pithan and Troy Calhoun.
