GULFPORT
Mrs. Jo Myers passed away July 19, 2013 in Gulfport at the age of 92.
Born May 5, 1921 in Tylertown, Mississippi, her parents were Henry Grady Harvey Sr. and Dixie Brumfield Harvey. She was raised in Tylertown and after high school attended MSCW her freshman year. She transferred to Mississippi Southern (now USM) in Hattiesburg where she graduated in 1941 with a degree in education and music. While at Southern, she met Billy Applewhite (Clyde Wm Jr.) and they married in 1942 when he got his Navy wings. They lived in Texas, Virginia, Florida, and then back to Mississippi.
After teaching many years in the Hattiesburg school system, she and her second husband, Don Myers, who was a sports announcer for a local television station in Hattiesburg, moved to the Gulf Coast in 1971. She taught at Popp's Ferry Elementary for several years and retired in 1982 after a 32 year teaching career. She was passionate about music as it was a great source of inspiration and relaxation for her and everyone who heard her play. She played the organ and piano and was especially proud of the Christmas CD that she made with a friend of hers.
