Billie Jo (Bettie Jo) Alphin, 77, of Summit Square Retirement Community, Waynesboro, and formerly of Buchanan, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2006 at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. She was born August 20, 1928 in Buchanan, Va., a daughter of the late Hugh M. Swartz, Sr. and Effie Fauber Swartz. A graduate of Hollins College in Roanoke, she taught for a short time in Rockbridge County. She was a former organist and elder at Buchanan Presbyterian Church. She moved to Waynesboro eight years ago, and was a current member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Richard Alphin, Sr.; and a sister, Mary Jane Morgan. Surviving are a son, Richard Alphin, Jr. of Daleville, Va.; daughter, Jane Alphin and husband, Frank Novitzki of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter, Anne and husband, Fred Forsmark of Goochland; daughter, Mary Jo and husband, Wesley Kern of Buchanan; (grand)daughter, Amy and husband, David Fowler of Buchanan; her grandchildren, Julia Forsmark, Richard Davis, Michael Davis, Charles Kern and Maribeth Kern; her great-grandchildren, William, Jacob and Andrew Fowler. She is also survived by a sister, Dr. Jean Swartz of Vinton; a brother and sister-in-law, Hugh M. and Ganelle Swartz of Martinsville; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006 at Buchanan Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Marina Gopadze and Robert McRae, with a reception immediately following. Interment services will be private. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Summit Square, 501 Oak Ave., Waynesboro.
