Isaac Newby

The funeral of Isaac Newby, which took place at the Friends' Church in Paint Township on last Thursday morning, October 11th, takes away from the community one of the old and well known citizens of Highland County. He was the second of a family of six children, all of whom preceded him except his youngest sister, the youngest child of the family, Mrs. Sallie Hockett, who still survives him.

Isaac Newby was born in North Carolina July 14th, 1806, consequently was in the 95th year of his age at the date of his death. He emigrated with his parents to Ohio in the year of 1817, and settled near the place of his death and so has spent his long life in the community where his father first settled.

He was twice married, first [in 1831] to Elizabeth Garrett, who died January 31st, 1840. Three children were born to this union, two sons and one daughter. One son died in childhood, the other grew to manhood. He enlisted in the Civil War and died in the service of his county. The daughter, Pauline Davis, is still living.

On October 24th, 1844, he was again married to Lucinda Lucas who died July 4th, 1886. Three children were born to the last union, a daughter and two sons, all of whom are living; Mrs. Tomkins and Ewing and Judge Cyrus Newby.

No man was better known in the community than Isaac Newby. Of limited education and without and special or ruling ambition, he was a man of sterling integrity and worth. Somewhat eccentric in character, yet only to that extent that caused his better and more prominent elements of manhood to be the more observable.

Simple in habits of life, industrious by nature and principle, he was the soul of hospitality and good fellowship.

Strictly honest in all his dealings, he expected and exacted the same from others. But with terms of a contract compiled with he was open and ready with the most liberal and charitable treatment. No one in the county in which he lived has a word but of praise of his life and intercourse with his neighbors.
