Ira was born in Kansas as second son of Henry Stonecipher Bayless and Irene Lucinda Keys Bayless. The family moved to Long Beach, California in 1913. A few months after their move to California the family attended a Scottish Rite event at the municipal auditorium. The wooden building collapsed which killed Ira's brother Virgil Eugene Bayless. Both parents were injured. Ira was not hurt.

Ira was interested in electronics from an early age. His family knew him to tinker with things electrical including radios and televisions. Through out his life he was employed in various jobs. His longest employment was at Douglas Aircraft as electronic technician responsible to test instruments in airplane cockpits.

Death was the result of cardio-respiratory arrest due to chronic sepsis (pneumonia). He was survived by daughter Patricia Ann Bayless Huffman, sons Paul Francis Bayless, and William Henry Bayless. Eight grandchildren survive: Jonathan Drew Huffman; Bennett Tracy Huffman; Ann Lindsey Huffman; Paul Francis Bayless, Jr; Karen Ann Bayless; Aaron William Bayless; David Paul Bayless; Diane Marie Bayless. Ira was predeceased (1940) by his wife Helen May Rowden Bayless and his parents and one brother. Also predeceased by a great grandson, Paul Francis Bayless III due to SIDS.
