Roman Catholic Cardinal. From 1978 until 1996, he served as Archbishop of Bombay. Born in Marol, outside of Bombay, he completed the necessary requirements for the priesthood and was ordained in 1949. He studied at the Pontifical College of St. Peter the Apostle and later became assistant parish priest in Bombay, while teaching Liturgy. In 1971, he was named titular Bishop of Bocconia and Auxiliary of Bombay. After he was placed in the capacity of coadjutor archbishop of Bombay in 1977 by Pope Paul VI and became archbishop one-year later. In 1988, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II and retired in 1996.
