Donald M. Nelson, 81, of Stephen, Minnesota passed away at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota on Tuesday, September 9, 2008.
Donald was born at Warren, Minnesota May 16, 1927 to Allard and Lillian (Rasmussen) Nelson. He grew up in Fork Township of Marshall County and graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minnesota. Donald served with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.
On September 13, 1956 he was united in marriage to Joyce Soderlund at Crookston. The couple settled in Fork Township and farmed there. They moved into Stephen in 1977. Donald retired in the early 90's, but continued to help on the farm. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Stephen and the Stephen American Legion.
Family members include his wife, Joyce; sons, Joel (LaRae), Detroit Lakes, MN, Todd, Stephen and Troy (Cheri), Big Lake, MN; a daughter, Kari (Tom) Sczepanski, Rochester, MN; six grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Nelson, Drayton, ND and Marlyn (Sharon) Nelson, Richfield, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Mary Means.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in First Lutheran Church at Stephen.
Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Mike Schendel, presiding; Leslie Widner, organist. Casket bearers will be Roger Regimbal, Harry Anderson, Walter Rud, Thomas Peterson, John Peterson, Richard Osowski and Jonathan Sczepanski. Military honors will be accorded by the Stephen American Legion.
Burial will take place at Stephen City Cemetery.
