Mary Ann was the daughter of James Conover/Cowenhoven and Mary Ninemaster of New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was baptized at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick on 4 December 1808, and was married in New Brunswick on 23 April 1828 to John Bull Sullivan. She appears on the 1850 census of New Brunswick with her husband and her six surviving children.
In 1860 Mary was widowed, and is found on the federal census in New Brunswick, aged 45, with four children: Mary, 25; James, 20; Victoria, 15; and Peter, 12 (of her other children, Anna had married, Agnes had died, and Edward must have been off working somewhere). In 1870 Mary was living in New Brunswick with daughter Mary E. and son Peter S., and in 1880 she was still in New Brunswick living with son Peter S., who worked in a cotton mill.
