Pioneer. He was born in the small village town of Farum, Denmark. A blacksmith by trade, he was one of the early settlers and explorers of northern California. He immigrated to the eastern United States in 1830, before arriving in the Oregon Territory in 1839. He helped establish the town of Benton City, California, working as a surveyor and serving as President of the Nataqua Territority. He was murdered enroute to the Black Rock Desert region of Nevada, while leading a small expedition party in search of silver. Mount Lassen Peak, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lassen County, California are all named in his honor.
