Nayland Denis Clark, 77, passed away at noon Tuesday at Takoma
Hospital in Greeneville.

He and his wife, Elaine had just celebrated their 50th Anniversary on June 29th.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Russell Clark; his brother in law and
sister-in-Iaws, Alan & Teresa Russell, of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Ruth Russell of
Knoxville;
Nieces and nephews: David Veley, Barbara & Scott Behan,
Ruth Ann Manchester, Anne Marie & Drew Friesen,
Maria & Drew Smith, Melissa & Mike Horning, Michelle & Steve
Esterline; and 12 great-nieces & and great-nephews;
his aunts, Bertha Moore, Katherine Moore, and Teresa Broyles,
Doloros Horne, Dolly Horne and Elizabeth Horne;
Cousins: Ann Moore & Fred Smith, of Greeneville,
Tom & Pat Moore of Clermont, Florida, and Marcia Moore
Medford of Elizabethton, and several other cousins;
Mr. Clark attended the Greeneville schools, and graduated from
Greeneville High School in 1954 and was 4th in his class. He was a graduate
of Tusculum College in 1958 where he was a Charles Oliver Gray Scholar,
and cum laude graduate with a double major in math and physics.
He worked at Sperry-Farragut in Bristol, and
McDonald-Douglas in North Carolina, before being hired by John
Gross to work at the Magnavox Company in Jefferson City, and
in Morristown. Sometime later, he was transferred to the
Greeneville Plant to work as Quality Control Statistical Analyst & Engineer.
During his early career, as computers were coming into use, he taught several
classes at Magnavox on using the computer and quality control.
He continued working there after the company became Philips Consumer
Electronics until he retired, just before the company became Five Rivers.
Before his retirement, the company honored him with a 30-Year party.
Nayland was a life long member of Asbury United Methodist Church,
and was a loyal and supporting member of the church. He
worked in all phases of the church: as head usher, as a Lay Leader, Sunday
School Teacher, Member of the prayer chain, Member and Chairman
of the Administrative Board; Member and Chairman
of the Board of Trustees during the pastorate of Brent Hall; He was also
a Depositor. He was a Teacher, with his wife, of the Sunday evening Methodist Youth
Fellowship (MYF) for several years, and was a former member of the
Cokesbury Sunday School class;
In 1973, he and Dee Dee Bowman were Co-Chairmen of the Centennial
Celebration for the Church, which was a year-long celebration;
Nayland was an active member of the community; he was a member of the
Little Theatre of Greeneville, serving on the board for many years; acting
on stage, and he may be remembered especially for his role as Sakini in TeaHouse
of The August Moon, a Marlon Brando role in the original film. He also did
program design, and set painting.
When Louise Orr directed her Andrew Johnson film, he portrayed the role
of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War.
In his younger years, he was an active member of the Jaycees, and held several
offices.
At that time, he was a member and president of the now defunct
Kiwanis Club of East Greene, before joining the Kiwanis Club of Greeneville
in 1982.
Soon after, he was elected Secretary, and remained in that position until 2010.
In 1983, he, with Jim Harris, revived the Kiwanis Kapers, and Nayland directed
the first 13 Kiwanis Kapers. They put together a working committee that
remained with them during those first years. The committee included Nayland
Clark, Jim Harris, David Price, Jon Headrick, and Jerry Hankins.
He worked on many projects throughout his membership, and
received many awards, including the Kripple K Award, Kiwanian of the Year,
and in 1996, the Club honored him with a Kiwanis International George F.
Hixson Fellow Award. In 2011, the Kiwanis Club honored Nayland by
dedicating the Kiwanis Kapers to him "Our Good Friend and Fellow
Kiwanian ... A Hixon Fellow Who Represents the Best of Kiwanis".
He was an avid photographer, and assisted the
Heritage Trust with photographs of the homes that were open during
the early Heritage Trust Tour of Homes.
He was active as long as his health permitted.
Nayland was a descendant of Joseph Harding, who fought in the Revolutionary
War at the Battle of Kings Mountain, and of Alice McBride Moore, kin of Nathan
Hale's brother. He was also descended
from Smith Tullock, who fought in the Union Army in the Civil War.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Clark, and his mother,
Virginia Moore Clark; Grandparents: EF Moore Sr. and Bessie Tullock Moore; Aunts and Uncles: John Thomas Moore, Everette Moore, Jr. & Laurene Moore Smith, Margaret Moore & WT Broyles, Gordon Moore, Juanita Moore & Jim Edmiston, Morris Moore; inlaws: Jesse and Mabel Horne Russell, Sister in Law: Lynette Russell Veley, and brother in Law: Buford Russell.
