Jack served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the War, he became a mail carrier for the Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

John J. "Jack" Hassett, 92, of Tomah died Friday, January 25, 2013 at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, Madison. He was born February 12, 1920 to John J. and Gertrude (Matdden) Hassett in Chicago, IL. He attended Maine Thompson High School in Des Plaines, IL. Jack proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army serving during WWII. After his service time, Jack has stayed in Tomah. He worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Tomah as a mail carrier, until 2011. Jack was the oldest WWII veteran at the VA Hospital in Tomah. He enjoyed listening to the radio and having the newspaper read to him. He was a devout Catholic all of his life. He prayed the Rosary numerous times a day. He had a generous heart, and donated to several different charities. He is survived by his brother, Robert Hassett of Indianapolis, IN, and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 303 Monroe St. Father David Bruener will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Relatives and friends are invited to call the church on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. The Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah is assisting the family.
