Tirah Campaign Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Newcastle, England, he served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, British Army. During the attack on the Dargai Heights on October 20, 1897, Private Lawson carried a wounded Gordon Highlanders officer off the field under heavy fire and subsequently returned and brought in Private even though he himself was wounded twice. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died in Walker, England, at age 82.
