Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Ireland, he was gazetted for the award on December 24, 1858 for his actions as a gunner in the Bengal Artillery of the British Bengal Army on January 29, 1856 at Lucknow, India during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. He was born in Gort, County Galway, Ireland and died there at the age of age of 40. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "Elected respectively, under the 13th clause of the Royal Warrant of the 29th of January, 1856, by the Officers and non-commissioned officers generally, and by the private soldiers of each troop or battery, for conspicuous gallantry at the relief of Lucknow, from the 14th to the 22nd of November, 1857." His Victoria Cross is on display at The Royal Artillery Museum in Woolwich, London, England.
