Genevive was the seventh of eight children. Her parents were of Swedish Decent. She loved the Swedish customs and food, and passed those traditions on to her children. She loved learning and wanted to get an education but, was unable to because there was no high school in Scipio abd due to her family's financial status was unable to go away to school. She repeated the eighth grade just so she could be in school. She continued to read and learn throughout her life.
As a young girl she worked for Orville Thompson in his store and a Yuba Dam in the commissary where were completing the dam. She helped her parents financially to build and furnish their home. She also helped care for her sister Emma's five children after the death of their mother.
