Civil War Veteran: served in the cavalry from 1 Aug 1861 until the end of the war. Per Kathy Kelly, as told by her grandfather, George F Dyer, Ben ran horses to Texas during the war. He liked what he saw of Texas and later moved the family to Texas from Missouri. Also per Kathy Kelly, Ben was captured and held prisoner in a ship off Galveston.

The photo of the three Dyer brothers is courtesy of Kathy Kelly. Note the Southern Cross of Honor worn by Ben. This is a commemorative medal first issued to veterans of the CSA in 1899 and 1900.
