PROF. PASCHAL HICKMAN DUNCAN, of Glencoe, a native of Gallatin County,
Ky., was born November 13, 1845. His father, Benjamin Duncan, a native
of Harrison County, was born in 1807, and was a well-to-do farmer; he
settled on a farm in Gallatin County in 1818, near Warsaw, Ky., where he
lived until his death, which occurred April 27, 1887. He was a member
of the Baptist Church for many years, but at the time of his death was
a prominent member of the Christian Church. He took an active part in
all local political matters. He married Miss M. Ellis, who was born
near Richmond, Henrico Co., Va., and was a daughter of James Adams
Ellis, also a native of Henrico County, Va. Six sons and four daughters
were born to their union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the
ninth child. James Duncan, the paternal grandfather of P. H. Duncan, a
native of Harrison County, Ky., and a farmer by occupation, removed to
a farm near Danville, Vermillion Co., Ill., where he died. The
maternal grandfather of our subject, a native of Virginia, came to
Kentucky early in the present century, and settled near Warsaw,
Gallatin County, where he died; he took an active part in the war of
1812. Prof. Paschal Hickman Duncan lived on the farm until his
nineteenth year, when he entered college, remaining in school till [sic]
he graduated. He taught for several years. In 1880 he was appointed
State Sunday-school evangelist, by the Kentucky Christian Sunday-school
Association, in which capacity he served for seven years, at the
expiration of which time he entered the ministry. July 25, 1883, he
married Sallie Orr, of Columbia, Adair Co., Ky., a graduate of Ghent
College, Ghent, Ky., and a daughter of Vernon and Mary C. (Botts) Orr.
Mrs. Duncan died October 3, 1887, at Corinth, Ky. Politically Mr.
Duncan is a Democrat; he represented Gallatin County in the Legislature
in 1875-76. He is a Royal Arch Mason of Tadmor Lodge, No. 138, at
Warsaw, Ky., and is also a member of the Christian Church. He owns
