Stephen Henry Carnes, 63, of Rome passed away Monday February 27, 2012 at his residence following a sudden attack.

A native of Peoria, Illinois, Mr. Carnes was born September 7, 1948 son of the late Henry Harrison Carnes and Florence Barbara Sommer Carnes. He had been a resident of Rome most of his life and prior to retirement, was employed by Sears as an appliance repair technician for 38 years. Stephen had varied interests including his cats, making homemade wine, and ham radio. He loved flowers, and pursued his interest in history as a member of the Captain Max Van Den Corput's Battery Camp 669 Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Survivors include his companion Betty Jean Crider Keener of Rome; two sons and a daughter in law Stephen (Angel) Carnes, and Richard (Dixie) Carnes, both of Rome; brother David Carnes of Rome; sisters Holly Heindel of Milledgeville, Nancy Sommer , Susan Mahon and Kathy Carnes all of Rome. Two granddaughters Eryn Stefani Carnes and Kiara Marie Carnes also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday in the Chapel of Parnick Jennings Sr.'s Good Shepherd Funeral Home with the Reverend Stephen Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers are members of the Captain Max Van Den Corput's Battery Camp 669 Sons of Cofederate Veterans and Phil Carver. Honorary pallbearers are all other Sons of Confederate Veterans and Denson Hamby.
