HENRY GABBARD:
Born 1768 in Frederick Co., Virginia, and died 1854 in Indian Creek, Owsley Co., Ky.. He married BARBARA HUNSUCKER Abt. 1792 in Burke, Co., N. C., daughter of ABRAHAM HUNSUCKER and ANNA ZIRKLE.

The following was written by Dallas Fox and provided by Find A Grave contributor JOYCE GARRETT-JONES:

About 1816, Henry and Barbara migrated by way of the Wilderness trail to Kentucky and homesteaded on Indian Creek in what was then Clay County (now Owsley County). Henry could neither read nor write English. When Owsley Co., KY was formed he was the only educated man among them so the original petition was drawn up by him in German and sent to Frankfurt. This is on display at the Boonesville County Seat of Owsley.

The tradition of the GABBARD Clan indicates that Henry Gabbard (Gabbert) and his wife, Barbara Hunsucker, were of German stock, born and brought up in the region of the Shenandoah Valley in the Virginia colony. According to the information now available Henry was born 1768. His grand-daughter, Nancy Gabbard Reynolds, says she was born Dec. 16, 1855, and that she was one year old when Grandfather Henry died. According to family tradition Henry and Barbara, after their marriage, lived in Burke County, North Carolina, where some of their children were born. Then they moved to Abingdon, Washington County, Va. where their son, Isaac Hugh GABBARD was born May 14, 1805, and most likely other children of their family were born. The lure of the vast wilderness beyond the mountains to the west, led them to migrate by way of the Wilderness Trail to the new land of Kentucky, there they located homesteads and settled on Indian Creek in what was then Clay County, about the year 1816.

Henry Gabbard is Buried in Esau cemetery of Owsley County.
