Owen, the son of Hugh and Mary Carrigan, was a pioneer of Boon Lake township, Renville county, MN. He was born in Vermont before his parents moved West. He began his farming career in MN at the age of 22. In addition to farming, he worked on the railroads between 1863 and 1870 likely around the Houston county, MN area.

He married Minnie Buce in 1879. Minnie was a survivor of the Indian Uprising of 1862. She witnessed the death of her parents and four siblings at the hands of the Sioux Indians and was held captive until the Indians surrendered.

The couple welcomed six children to their marriage:
Ellen, James, Owen, Pauline, Daisy, and Ernest (died at 6 months).
